Lost my wee New Hampshire Red, Ella tonight. She was just coming up for a year old. She has been grand, bright as usual and still managed to escape over the omelette netting this morning!

Was out for the day and she and three others came running to the fence when they heard me come in the gate when I got home. At 5.30 I saw her sitting in the mud and went out - Alice is broody and hogging the nesting box so I thought maybe Ella was desperate. Lifted her up and she didn't seem right and I popped her in the nesting box. Tidied up the run and went back to check on her and she still wasn't right. Checked her over and nothing visible. She usually isn't that keen to be handled so knew something was wrong. Husband drove us to vet and she passed away in the waiting room.

My husband, daughter (9yrs) and I were devastated. At least we know she didn't suffer and we were there with her. The only consolation is that we were with her, last time Mabel was PTS and it was horrible having to make that decision although when I went in with Ella I was prepared.

Still find it hard to believe. Have come to the conclusion that Wednesday's are not a good day for me - funerals three weeks in a row :(
