Hello,

 

I get my first ever chickens next Saturday and am just in the process of acquiring all I need. As they are ex batts I have got them layers crumble. Am I right in thinking I therefore don't need to get grit too while they are on that? Sure I read that somewhere on the pinned posts of this forum at some point.

layers ration be it mash or pellets do's contain grit in the form of calcium carbonate ( it can vary between brands the better the quality of the feed the better the grit ) so unless they are going to be penned up with no free ranging time then they don't need extra grit personally I stopped putting extra grit out about 3-4 years ago as I'd got a couple of birds that would pig out on the grit shell quality is very good with the exception of one hen but she's only lay one good egg in 12 since she first started to lay and nothing ever improved her eggs
