Laser eye surgery?

Recommended Posts

My mum had the laser surgery which was much easier than the later surgery she had for a Macular (sp) hole. The later problem had absolutely nothing to do with the origial op (lasered front of eye, macular at back of eye).

A year later she had a cataract removed which was a GUARANTEED side effect of the macular repair op!

Her sight is still degenerating and all of this is macular degeneration which they assure her (lots of different Moorfields surgeons) has absolutely nothng to do with her original laser correction. Without having had that original surgery her sight would be an awful lot worse. With all this, she doesn't wear glasses as they wont help.

Macular degeneration can be significantly improved by eating a portion of spinach every day! I saw it on 'The Truth about food' where they tested the theory. The people on the trial just could not believe how much their eyes improved in 3 months. The conclusion was totally positive.

Ooo, I have spinach in my salad most days... hope it works as my eyesight is getting worse  At the moment, I only need specs for close work, reading and screen work, but I think I'll need them all the time soon.

Like Emma, my hearing isn't too good either; I was passenger in a bad car crash 20 years ago and my right ear drum burst - the hearing in that ear hasn't been the same since  I can lip read to a certain extent if necessary, which fill sin on what I can't hear, but lots of background noise defeats me too :?

Oooh thanks for that I'll tell Mum, she is thinking maybe she needs some more work done as things are getting worse again.

I had it done (and talk about squeamish: I had my boys at home because I just wouldn't go to a hospital!).

The worst of all was 1) the funny smell while they were doing the surgery (as they only give you a mild local anaesthetic) and 2) paying for it! (I had the LASIK method - very personalised to the shape of each eye and expensive).

Other than that it is perfect. After years of glasses, contact lenses, and having to reach for the glasses as soon as I woke up its fantastic to open my eyes and just see, 20/20 vision, it's great, worth every penny!

I went to Ultralase in Birmingham and they were really good, reassuring and explaining everything to me before the op and while it was going on.

It didn't hurt and I could enjoy improved eyesight as soon as the op was over (about 5 minutes in each eye).

So I do thoroughly recommend it. The reason while I didn't have it before is because it was a relatively new operation and I wanted to wait for a few years to see it it carried any secondary effects. I believe it's safe but it's very important to follow the after-care procedures (not rubbing the eyes, sleeping for a couple of weeks with the goggles, etc).

Good luck if you decide to go ahead!
