tommy64
hi everyone we"ve been thinking about a way to give the chooks more space.we have thought about putting the eglu on a higher concrete level(all ready there) and putting a large cage around it. we would then connect a tube made of chicken wire and connect it to the omlet"s ready made run which is on the lower lawn level. anyone have ideas if this will work? Eyren
You probably need to give the "access tube" a floor of planks with cross-struts, so the chickens can walk up and down with easy - chicken wire is going to hurt their feet Also, chicken wire isn't fox-proof - you'd be better off with weldmesh or similar. Good luck with the project - my DH is far too un-DIY-ish to attempt run construction!
tommy64
THANKS we will use weld mesh and put planks on the surface of the tunnel
Eyren
You're welcome! We don't see many foxes round here (they seem to prefer it in the city centre, away from the farmers and their shotguns!), but I've heard that a determined fox will bite through chicken wire. It's fine if you have a secure run and just want extra fencing to keep the chickens out of your herb garden when they free-range, though! Egluntyne
Sounds a fascinating idea. Eyren is right about the chicken wire v weldmesh. Show us some photos when you have completed the project won't you.
Guest
depends on the elevation of the tunnel, they might not gain enough purchase on the planks to climb up to the eglu. Try asking on freecycle to see if anyone has an old wooden ladder or put some wooden pieces across the planks to make a sort of stairway, does that make sense!?
