jman2007
Hi I am just wondering if anyone knows of any grass food or weed killers that may be safe to use with chickens? Or will I have to treat my grass and then move the girls back after a few weeks? Thanks
Lindsay
Personally, I wouldn't recommend grass feed or weed killer with chickens around, I find that the 'girls' provide all the fertilizer my lawn needs, and provided you don't let them free range on it all the time, it should stay lush and green all year round!! ( ... am now imagining all the other hen keepers on the forum grimacing as they look out on the bare patch of earth which used to be their lawn !!! Tee Hee)
Snowy
You are right Lindsay! Mine have restricted access to the lawn - it is looking very short, but it has survived the winter. They have fed it and weeded it - I'm hoping for great things when it starts growing again!
Eyren
If you're having trouble with individual weeds like dandelions, you might like to get a daisy grubber (a pointy gardening tool) and dig them out them as treats for your girls. I don't have weeds in my lawn any more - though admittedly I don't have much lawn either!
Egluntyne
I personally would be very reluctant to use any chemicals where the hens roam. Chicken poo does make great fertiliser. My neighbour takes it and dilutes it in water, leaves it to brew for a while and then waters the grass with it.
