funny smell....

Ok, a useful thing to do with a pregnant cat near delivery is to trim her bottom hair so you can see when she starts to ooze a little before labour. Get someone to help you and use blunt ended scissors and trim ever so carefully. Next, examine your puss cat:

Does she have any fluid or gunk coming from either orifice? She might have an upset stomach and have diarrhoea or mucus stuck on her bottom, both of which reek.

If there is anything green coming from her bottom, call your vet. She might have an infection or a problem with her kittens.

She might have gone into labour, and frankly amniotic fluid and mucus from her delivery channel is also a disgusting smell - that's why I threw away my duvet, it STANK. Faintly metallic smell, like blood, but rank. The mucus is normally orangey yellowy pink, and is a good sign that's she's about to give birth.

if there is nothing unusual about her botty, pick up the skin on the back of her neck, and lift it up. If it snaps back straight away, she's not dehydrated, if it doesn't, she is dehydrated and this is a good indication something else may be wrong.

If you can, smell her breath, bad breath is another sign of distress - not fishy or catfoody, that's normal, but really horrid. If she's ok with you being near her mouth, check her gums. Pale pink is what we're after, white is very very bad, as is blue, bright red is less worrying. If they're pink, press one with your finger to make it go white, and see how quickly it goes pink again. 2 seconds is about right, and longer than this suggests dehydration again.

Feel her tummy gently, if it feels hard, or you can feel contractions, it's probably labour coming on. She can handle giving birth by herself, but if you're at all worried about her, I would take her to the vet. A funny smell isn't normally a good sign.

Sounds good, they do like licking away at their bits when they're near to delivery, we thought Cleo and Evie were going to lick them away! Keep an eye on her and fingers crossed! When Evie started labour, she left an unpleasant spot of gunk on the carpet, which is how I knew. Cleo decided to have hers while I was asleep, so no help there.
