Won't go into cube

Recommended Posts

5 of the Hip Hop Chickens take themselves to bed no worries - but the husband loving Run has decided that she wants to sleep ontop of the glug so for the last 2 nights DH has had to move the sleeper, open the run door, coax her down and pick her up and we then have to put her in through the eggport. I think we went wrong by not putting them in the cube when we first got them, we let them into the run and about 5 mintues later I thought oh bum! I think we did that wrong!

Is there any way we can stop her getting up onto the Glug? DH thinks it's cute although I did tell him it will become real old real quick especially as he's the one having to get her everynight!

Why not remove the grub/glug at bedtime for a couple of nights and see if that does the trick - or put a wooden ramp on the steps until she gets the hang of going up to bed.

There is always one that has to make herself known and be different!

We did talk about that, so think that'll be tonight's plan, we have a perch in there - I say perch, we rammed an old broom handle through the run!! And on Saturday I was worried that a few of them would start using that instead of going into the cube, but it was all good.

I think that most chicken owners must be millionaires (sp?) as I'm seriously thinking of giving up work to just sit and look at them all day but wouldn't be able to afford it, so will have to start doing the lottery or something!!

Hi not sure if this post is gonna work first time, not to good with computers.

got my chicken yesterday. :D kids and i have been very excited been waiting a month. man who delivered them put them into cube and said give them 20 mins and if not out of cube put then into run myself. left them for 30 mins before i did and all day they were fine untill a night they would not go back in. So put torch in cube and 25 mins later in went one after much thought and looked like slight panic of still being out at night. But pther one would not go in and settled down by wheels of cube untill a 9.30 sent my son in to run to put it away. And now thismorning is will not come out again. Is this normal and how long should i leave it before i kick it into run. :?:

i dont want to have to do this every day and night. :( [/i]

Hi Mummykins - I had exactly the same thing with mine the first couple of days. They just didn't seem to know the eglu was 'home'. The first night I had to put them in and the next morning they refused to come out. The second night they all tried to go to bed in a flower pot - cue huge panic when they couldn't all get in. We lured the big boss chicken in with a torch (didn't work just leaving the torch in the eglu, we had to get her to follow the torch beam in like a cat with a laser pen). We must have looked ridiculous - 4 adults and a teenager in the pen with torches  !! The other two wouldn't go in so we left them alone for 10 minutes, Hyacinth came out and shouted at them to get in before the neighbours saw and they scuttled in.

After that they all troop off to bed just before it gets really dark. (although they all come running out again if I go in to the run too soon to shut the eglu door)

Try not to worry they will settle down in a couple of days - and I mean that as a world class panicker. The first couple of days are a bit scary!

Hi everyone,

I have just got my chickens today - new cube came on Thursday. Omlet don't deliver in our area so I didn't realise I had to put my girls in the cube first. Have just read your posts and so have rushed out to the garden and put them in the cube.

Poor babies have no idea where they are or where home is! I will let them out soon.

This forum is really great - lots of advice on offer.
