got 3 chickens on 22.4.08 - 2 have already laid one egg each. 28.4.08

HOWEVER! today we discovered one "egg" has been laid without a shell. It has a largeish yolk some white but definitely no shell! - answers and advice please...

"Softies" are quite common when they start laying - it can take them a while to get the hang of the whole thing. I wouldn't worry unless you get them regularly.

 

If you're getting soft-shelled eggs, limestone flour is supposed to be really good for that (and good for their general health too).

Probably just a blip in hens who are new to laying.

 

A tbsp of limestone flour added to their pellets might help. Available from equestrian shops or Ebay (sold for repties).

When my lot lay soft shelled eggs, they very often eat the soft shell and all I find is the egg. Although sometimes they eat that too. The soft shells are paper thin and days later you may find bits of paperlike substance in the garden or in the poo tray.

 

They may just be new and settling into egg laying. I echo the advise given in the above posts.
