hayhatch
Hey everyone! As you all know I am currently am chickenless and cubeless (sadly lol) but I;m reading up on chickens and of course logging on to this fab site everyday. I've decided that I would love to get a orange (they just make me smile! be bright folks!) and a selection or orpington, wynadotte, sussex or pekin bantams. As I have said I have been reading up on them and have fallen in love with these breeds. So my questions are these! Does anyone own any of the above? If so what are your experiences of them like, temperment, laying broodiness etc? Do these breeds get on well together? How many would you recommend of either or all breeds for a beginner? And how many or either or all breeds would fit comfortably in a cube with a 3m run? Sorry lots of questions!
jomaxsmith
Hi there, You probably already know that pure breeds don't lay in the winter so unless you want to be buying eggs it would be a good idea to add some hybrids to the mix! I have 3 hybrids so can't answer your other questions Jo
mrsm_jones
I have 3 Orps and a maran. The Orps are lovely and run to me for cuddles. The Maran doesn't, but is great for her big brown eggs. 2 of my orps are not laying yet, but 1 is, and I get about 3-4 eggs per week from her. I get about 5-6 eggs from my Maran. mrsm_jones
PS...The orps are huge, and the sussex less so. My friend has 9 sussex hens, but they don't cuddle. Depends on what you want your hens for.
Snowy
Dilly who posts on here has bantams in a cube, including pekins and an orpington. She has 10 in her cube. You could probably get quite a few more in (I have 10 larger hybrids) but it depends how much room they have to roam. Dilly has a chicken blog >>>here<<< if you want to read about her chooks.
