Found this in the coop this morning, not in the nest but below the perch. Yesterdays was minus even any shell.

Still she is young and has only been laying a week so hopefully they will get better.

oyster shell does the trick

It is very common in hens new to laying. They need a while for their internal workings to settle down.

 

Oyster shell is a good idea. Mixed Poultry grit is vital.

 

I also use limestone flour, but my hens are elderly now.

Aaagh if it is common I can stop worrying it is the weather - just had a softy from Roast today - think it was her, don't think others are laying. Was worried it was the weather but it is only her third egg

We had 2 soft shelled eggs last week. It was really odd as we have never had them before and it happened out of the blue. However, over the previous weeks, there had been a 'stray' peacock doing the rounds in the village and last Friday (16th May), the peacock managed to get up on to the roof of our house (in full view of the chickens in the back garden) and TOTALLY freaked them out. The soft shelled eggs happened in the aftermath of that. I read up about it and it said they can be brought on by stress, so I put it down to that (they have plenty of mixed grit).
