Could this be Gape Worm?

Recommended Posts

My chicken Miranda keeps opening her beak like she is yawning, she's been doing it for a while, this morning I saw Clarice doing it a few times as well. They are all laying really well, have red combs, are eating and drinking normally and behaving normally too , just apart from the opening of the beak.

I have been using Verm X once a month for 3 days since I got them, but have read that this is only a preventive measure not a cure for worms, so I want to get hold of Flubenvet. Had a look on the Omlet shop but can't see it?? Have phoned local pet shop- they do not sell it, nor does Scats which is where I got the Verm X from.

Quite worried really in case they have got gape worm and it will be too late before I can get hold of some Flubenvet. I think I remember that olive oil down the beak may help? Will have to wait til this evening to attempt that though :?

ANy thoughts gratefully received.

If the have gapeworm, they gape in an attempt to shift the blockage, so the seem to cough too, they also shake their head, look unwell, have a poor appetite and go out of lay.

The attempt to cough the worm up, and occasionally succeed in shifting bits of it.

Also, if you shine a torch down the throat, you can see the red worm in the trachea.

They may be yawning in an attempt to cool off in the warmer weather.

If you decide to go ahead with the Flubenvet, the dose is double for gapeworm, with an egg withdrawal period of one week during and one week after the treatment finishes.

Hi

As a new chicken keeper myself I cannot offer you any solution to your problem but I see you were saying you wanted to get hold of Flubevent and you could not find it on Omlet. I have ordered some myself today funnily enough for the first time and I went to the Domestic Fowl Trusts website and found it on there. Let us know how you get on.

Hi- I have purchased some flubenvet from Wormers.co.uk. and hopefully it will arrive quickly.

As all 3 chickens seem happy in themselves- laying, dust bathing, eating, drinking...I am hoping that they are just hot!

I will try and look down Miranda's beak later- wish us luck!
