Moulting hens advice

Recommended Posts

Please could someone advise me. One of my hybrid hens has been losing feather since February and is continuing to do so now. Losing them from her bottom, neck and front. I have heard/read that taking them off Layers pellets and feeding a corn based diet helps them refeather up quicker as it stops them laying during this time.

I'd like to know what kind of corn diet are we talking about? Has anyone else done this to their hens during the moult?

She is not being picked on by the others and is healthy in all areas and is still laying.

Many thanks.

You would be better off keeping her on the layers pellets and giving her more protein, as feathers are made mostly of protein.

A corn diet is too fatty.

To get more protein into her you could give her tuna (rinsed and dolphin friendly), scrambled egg, or organic cat food.

Good luck.
