Daphne went broody 2 wks ago (she seems to go broody at the drop of a hat),and she normally just snaps out of it. However, this time it seems to be going on and on. We lock her out of the eglu in the day, and have put an enormous flower pot in her nest, I have bathed her cold water (seemed to like it ) etc etc. But she still turns anything into a nest. She's behaving quite strangely sqawking like a crow, and at around 6pm goes completely crazy climbing all over the eglu desparate to get in, twice during this crazed state i've found her on top of a 6 ft wall ?? However, my main concern is that she isn't eating, initially we could get some food down her when she first got up, but now she seems to have gone on hunger strike apart from a few cornflakes, which is the only thing she'll eat - and she has got very thin. I'm worried about her, and Phoebe is fed up because she has lost her friend to play with and can't access the eglu to lay in!! Will she just snap out of it herself, surely she won't make herself ill by not eating??

You need a broody cage. A strong wire dog cage will do.

 

Raised off the floor and with nowhere for her to sit, placed in the run so that the fox doesn't get her.

 

It should take about 4 days to snap her out of it.

I've had 4 broody's at the same time recently now down to 2 and a bit ( I think Attila's on her way back to normal. )

 

They lose an awful lot af weight- so bony when you pick them up, I have given them porridge with corn, tuna and poultry spice in - they are not laying so eating the layers pellets isn't as important.

 

I chuck them out in the morning with a bowl of food and again in the evening when we get back from work - at least I know they are getting something twice a day

 

Doris layed an egg yesterday, two weeks after stopping her broody phase, so I'm pleased that she's finally getting back to normal - she went broody in March

The trouble is she won't eat even if I get her out and put it in front of her - apart from the odd cornflake. A broody cage seems so extreme - you see I don't mind her being broody i'm just worried about the not eating.

If you put her in a broody cage she will snap out of it relatively quickly, and then will eat for Britain when she is back to normal.
