my fat hen
Hello everyone, I am sorry that my first post is in the clinic, but I'm having a spot of bother with one of my hens! I've had my two Rhode Islands's for about five weeks altogether, (Patty and Selma) About a week ago I noticed that Selma was keeping one eye shut. I thought at first that she had been pecked or scratched it on something, but then the other eye started to close too She was also a bit wheezy when I picked her up, but otherwise she is still eating and laying normally, although she is thin. I went to the vets on Monday, who said she hasd conjunctivitis and got some Baytril, but to be honest, it doesn't seem to be having any impact on her. She has also been scratching her head quite a lot, so I used the Johnsons anti mite spray on her which has made no difference either, I wormed her with Flubenvet to boot, just in case I am now really at a loss as to what to do next if she doesn't perk up, I hate seeing her in discomfort, and she is such a friendly hen; has anyone come across similar symptoms before, and any suggestions as to what I should do? Egluntyne
Hello and welcome to the forum. Sorry you are having a spot of bother. Re the conjunctivitis.....this sounds a very unlikely remedy, but if you brew some bog standard tea and let it go cold (no milk or sugar!) and then bathe the hens eyes as often as you can for a few days, it might help. Works wonders for humans. Are you being over generous with any powders such as diatom or redmite powder? That can give them sore eyes and make them wheezy sometimes. surferdog
Welcome to the forum bog standard tea and let it go cold (no milk or sugar!) and then bathe the hens eyes . This is exactly what my mum told me to do with baby's sticky eyes - worked like a charm.
my fat hen
Thankyou for your replies and the welcome I will give the tea a go, I have used the red mite powder, but that was after her eye problem started, so I don't think it is connected. I think I've gone into overdrive a bit with all the remedies though, I've spent a small fortune already (vets visit, mite powder and spray, wormer, citricidal, scaly leg lotion) - I'm expecting gold plated eggs at this rate! I am hoping that the antibiotics kick in soon, I've started syringing them in as the vet had said just to dilute it in the water, but the other hen seems to drink more than her and I was worrying that she wasn't getting a full dose. I never expected to become so attached to them so quickly - amazing how they bok bok their way into your heart!
