clucking mad
we got our chickens (boiled scrambled and fried) on wednesday morning, we were told that they were 4 months old and that we had to wait another 2 months until they started laying. on friday i did the usual routine of giving them food and water and all that sort of stuff. i opened the little door thing on the side of the eglu and too my suprise i found an egg! on their second night! i havnt even let them out of their run yet. i didnt even think that they were very settled as we live on a main road, and they are a few foot from it (seperated by a fence) and every time a fire engine came past they were really scared. it was only a really small egg weighing 46g but it still tasted v. nice btw i also dicovered that they adore sun dried cranberries. i know its really posh, and probably what the queen feeds her chickens but they were fighting over them loads! Ziggy
Well done to your chicken for the first little egg... I hope you didn't forget to do the egg dance... It's very exciting finding the first egg isn't it? We had to wait longer to get ours when we got our first chooks a long time back, but when DD2 did find it, she screamed so loud I'm sure the whole neighbourhood got to know!!! (and I rushed out thinking something had happened to her chooks!!). Our first one was small too, but we shared it between five of us!! Sundried cranberries.... sounds lovely... happy chickens!! Hen Watch
Congrats on 1st egg. Sure your girls will get used to road/fire engine noise soon. My lot were initially startled by planes but now ignore them completely. Also ignore noisy petrol mower. Mine get spooked if a hawk goes overhead or the neighbour goes up a ladder to do his gutters, he must look like a predator from above.
