Mary Mateus
Have now had my six hens three weeks and am just getting used to the responsibilty!!! However this morning we noticed that one of our Gingernut rangers has a very very sore bit at the top of her tail. I am assuming that the two biggest hens are bullying her as well as our smallest Pepperpot. Do I need to take her to get checked or will it get better on its own. Also any tips on how to stop my two biggest bullying the others. Its so worrying.
Chicken Licken
get some purple spray from your neares horsey supplier and spray her sore area with that. If the others make her bleed they will then peck her continuously. Also before you purple spray her give her a thorough check for lice and other creepy visitors as this can make them very itchey and they peck at their own feathers then. Someone else will be along with more advice I'm sure
Egluntyne
Hello and welcome to the forum. Have you actually seen them bulling her? There is a gland at the top of the tail (the preen gland) which occasionally can get infected, so why not check it. It is situated on the back, just about there the tail starts and is a ping bump. It it is red or swollen then it is infected, and she might need to see a vet. If it is just feather pulling, how about trying some anti peck spray? Also , provide distractions such as greens to peck at and have more food and drink "stations" as food issues can often be the cause of bullying. Good luck.
