Was due to go and collect 5 black araucana chicks (week old) yesterday, but decided to cancel. Couldn't get through to the breeder by phone or email to let her convince me otherwise so just had to leave a message on her phone in the end.

 

DH was being very good about it but I think it might have been one more chook too many! We have a week away booked when they would have been just out in an Eglu - didn't fancy leaving them with the neighbours for a week or putting them in the Eglu run inside our fixed run and cutting down on the other girls space. Also I really should get some work done other than chicken watching 5 baby chicks would not have made that work

 

Oh well maybe next year. I should at least wait for my existing girls to all start laying first

Shame the lady was not in to 'talk you out of it' .

 

I hope you get them next year, how exciting to get week old girls .

 

I agree it would be very hard to work with week old girls, I would not want to take my eyes of the little babies !

It is addictive, isn't it. We were only going to get 4 hens. Then it increased to 7. Now we have 17.

 

There's always next year.

I am consoling myself that these weren't quite the araucanas that I wanted and that next year hopefully we could do it from the egg stage. This breeder will rent out the incubators etc as well as heat lamps If she is still talking to me - I am so worried that I have upset her by changing my mind at the last minute - but I had been trying to get hold of her all morning

 

Anyway it is a business - I'm sure next year I will get some

Oh dear - just looked in at my girls in the Cube before locking their door for the night. So much more room for more - DH might have to do the run extension next year Janty I love the 4 -> 7 -> 17, I had better brace myself for when DH has a look at the forum later He might have heart failure

 

We were originally going to have 4, went for 6 and ended up with 7 due to one we took home being the wrong one
