ANOTHER quick chick question WITH PICTURE...

Recommended Posts

Well, having got up off the remaining 7 eggs and gone off for a scratch around I promplty removed the eggs thinking that, as they were cold and unattended they wouldn't hatch. Gave Speckle about an hour in the run with her babes then put her back, only to find her frantically digging and looking for her eggs. So, we put them back! She is now happily sitting on them again  and I don't think really that they've got a hope of hatching. So when do I remove them? Ours are "up" today really, the other 5 of ours all hatched together on Saturday, the other five are "up" tomorrow.

when i was researching eggs and hatching times, my books said that she will sit on any unhatched eggs for a few days after her first has hatched just in case but eventually she will lose interest in them and just be concerned with the chicks. don't know if this helps. maybe you could take them away one by one and see if she notices.

i took cleo off the nest for a bit today so she could stretch her legs and she did the opposite, just stood there for a while and didn't seem to bothered about getting back on them. but i know another egg is trying to hatch , saw a crack in it, so i shoved her back on them. little madam.

Well in fact the problem is half solved, she doesn't seem at ALL interested so, (bit gruesome) we "knocked" one of our unhatched bought eggs - empty, just ordinary egg, so we did the other one, also empty. Then we tried one of the eggs we'd had from a friend - also empty so I'm actually REALLY glad because that means that everything that could of hatched, did hatch, no chicks died in their shells or anything. She's still sitting on a few eggs but I think she'll get less and less bothered by them, she's really cool underneath now, even when she's been sitting on the eggs they feel cool when she gets up. Mother Nature is just SO amazing.

The little brown one is (I think) a female cream legbar - she's called Bumble, and she's MINE!!
