Bexiboo
I am getting some chickens on sunday (see sig, very excited) they are about 10months old. I haven't seen them however the lady who we are getting them from has told me that they have bare red bottoms. She has used DE on them incase it was mites but it is still red and bare. They are laying fine and their combs still look fine. Anyone have any clue? Thanks.
Egluntyne
Why not try Barrier Red mite Powder when you get them to be on the safe side. Works a treat and smells divine.
Bexiboo
Thanks for the advice. No mites have been seen, I am a little worried it may be something else.
Egluntyne
You won't actually see mites on the chicken Bexiboo....they only feed on the chicken at night....they live in any woodwork and under roofing felt in the housing. Signs in the coop are grey deposits which look like fag ash. Wipe it with a tissue and if it smears red then that is redmite. You may also note tiny red clusters. That is redmite too...after they have eaten. Lice are noticeable. They are a couple of mms long and cling to the feathers. They also lay clusters of white eggs at the base of the feathers, particularly around the vent.
Helen&Lee
A couple of mine are like that due to feather pecking. Helen
