I don't think it is just bantams - traditional "farmer" type adverts always include a rooster with a pair or trio. That's why hobbysist like ourselves need to be careful when buying.

 

Poultry centres are probably your best bet. Try and find a good one near you, with helpful staff.

I think it' because the majority of bantams sold are pure breeds, and that they are used for breeding purposes, hence selling them with a cock (carrying on the bloodlines etc?)

They usually just sell hens on there own though, i'd have a look in Practical Poultry breeders list. They list reputable breeders in there and are usually very helpful :)
