Does anyone know why bantams are sold either in pairs or trios with a cockerel as part of the deal? We'd like some bantams, but obviously not with the boy included! Is there anywhere that sells just the girl bantams?

maybe its because boy bantams dont make good meals?

i managed toget my girls seperately, that was at woodside but i don't think they have any at the mo.

I don't think it is just bantams - traditional "farmer" type adverts always include a rooster with a pair or trio. That's why hobbysist like ourselves need to be careful when buying.

 

Poultry centres are probably your best bet. Try and find a good one near you, with helpful staff.

I got my bantams from Thorne's in Letchworth, and was able to just buy hens.

 

You could always contact the seller, explain your situation and see if they'll let you just buy the hens, although the price will probably be the same.

I think it' because the majority of bantams sold are pure breeds, and that they are used for breeding purposes, hence selling them with a cock (carrying on the bloodlines etc?)

They usually just sell hens on there own though, i'd have a look in Practical Poultry breeders list. They list reputable breeders in there and are usually very helpful
