i just gone out to put ducks to bed, and my saxony was in water but was shaking and rather wet, why didnt she get out? the other duck has got out,

they have a side that is bricks built up to help them out i have her wrapped in towels that we are warming up via the dryer, but still shivering. any advise, we are now gonna make it more shallow put loads of bricks at bottom, the water is deep im worried if i hadnt gone out she would have died

any suggestons please im so upset

shes ok, i have put towels in the dryer, and then i have run my dryer, as it a condenser she sat in front of it as it blowing the warm air out of it.

the shivering has stopped.

she has returned to her friend now who looked very pleased, and we have put more roackery in it so it goes shallow at one end see if that helps

Sounds as if she got a bit water-logged. Young ducks (you mentioned they are only 16 weeks on a previous thread) can get over excited about being in the water and before they know it their feathers are too heavy with and they can't get out. She sounds as if she had been fighting to get out and exhausted her self and began to shiver. Did she look like she had been struggling?

It depends on how they where raised really. Did they have a pond at the breeders? This could be the first time having their own pond and she could have not known her limits?

On the other hand she could have just felt like a night on the tiles and decided to stay out and got too cold?

Ducks naturally stay by their pond at night, so that if any predators where to come along they could swim to the middle.

 

I would put more rocks in and watch to see if she can get out. Or you could make a lid for it to restrict the time they go in to make sure you are around to monitor until you feel comfortable they are Ok on their own?

If you've made a shallow area with an easier way for her to get out then she should be fine now. They will still need a deeper section of water as well, so don't fill it too full of rocks. It does sound like she had been struggling to get out.

hi thanks, she is ok this morning, no pond just a small tub to dip her head in, here we have now built one side up so hopefully she dont get stuck, and a deep side but still a large rock if any problems in a corner were she can get out. at night time they like to go ito there little house, so we have been locking them in, then let out about 7 next morning. today ill be keeping very close eye on her and yes maybe a lid so if i do go out then i know she is safe.
