bokbokbok
I have finally had to admit I just can't afford to start with every thing new. I can't afford an Eglu (although I desperately want one!) and my husband, who is the most supportive husband in the world, has said that he will only continue to be so supportive if this new venture costs a minimum amount of money. To that end I put an advert in my local FREECYCLE this week and am just back from picking up food and drink containers and an extremely large nesting box. It is so large I haven't even had a chance to look at it as the woman's husband and son put it in the car without me inspecting it. It isn't quite what I wanted but I think if I start off with the freebies then OH will see that I am serious about this and relax a little later on. Other news is that I have found not one but TWO sources for ex-bat hens in my area. I haven't contacted them yet but know-people-who-know-people who have taken birds from both farms so I should be able to get at least one or two ex-bats among a couple of non-ex-bats The next step will be to section off a part of the garden with a run, put the bits and bobs in and then wait until the end of July to organise the birrrrrrrrds yay! How exciting is THIS??
AJuff
Well done you!!! How lovely to plan and not be put off by having it all. You could sell your eggs and save for an eglu then.
bokbokbok
hehehehehe - how many eggs would I have to sell before I could do that? Or - how many chickens would it take to afford an eglu in a month . . . ??? :D:D
bokbokbok
That's the containers and the nesting box all cleaned - the nesting box will have to be done again tomorrow but the worst is off it now. It is definitely a home made affair and I don't think it is great but it obviously did the freecycle lady's girls for around 5 years so . . . if they aren't fussy - why should I be? The joints have been sealed with what looks like bathroom sealant at some point but this is all starting to come off in huge wads so I think I will have to take a stanley knife to it and remove it all. I also used so much water washing it all out I was worried about the carbon footprint of taking on second hand stuff!
AJuff
Sounds like a very productive day for you!! I spent the morning giving the eglu, run and walk in run a fabulous clean! I have removed a tonne of old smelly wood chips and gravel and replaced it with very fresh Easibed. Even OH can't moan about the smell now!
