We are looking at getting a cube with 4 hens. The cube would be kept on woodchip and not moved. I've read that you need to resite chickens as parasites can build up. Has anyone any thoughts or experience on this?

Also we can't fit a cube extension in - would 4 hens really have enough room in a standard cube run? Freeranging isn't an option due to lots of foxes.

Thanks

when we had the eglu we had a permanent area and found this worked very well (especially through the winter). When i completely clean out the run i sprinkle Stalosan (an agricultural powder that is harmless to humans and animals), it freshens and nutralises the soil and helps pretect animals from disease.

Mine came in a big tub and it lasts for ages.

Traditionally people did move chicken runs etc every year or two to avoid the build up of parasites in the soil. I do the same, really to be on the safe side, and re-turf the original area of grass to keep things looking good.

I haven't used soil sterilizers and prefer not to, as is just as easy for me to move the run. I try to garden organically and there are so many good beasties living in the soil that I wouldn't want to use it.

I guess which option you go for is just a personal choice!
