Is it time for the dreaded bumpa bit? Advice please

Recommended Posts

Quick question before my trip to the dental hygienist ( ):

Olive has persisted with the pecking and general harrassment of the gingernuts. I've been spraying the Ukadex on them, but now they just scoot off into the distance and look at me reproachfully from behind a bush as I spray vaguely in their direction. Most of it ends up in my hair

Not even a handful of mixed corn or mealworms will tempt them out (instead, lucky old Olive gets to polish it all off, as she isn't the one being sprayed).

Do people get someone else to hold the chicken while you spray it? It smells so bad I don't think my teenage daughters would volunteer.

I'm a bit hesitant to use a bumpa bit, but it this going to be the best thing to do now? And how tricky are they to fix in place?

When I was spraying Gucci she just got grabbed from behind and tucked under one arm. That way you can spray directly on the correct area and in a concentrated dose.

It doesn't make for a very good hair conditioner

If the spraying doesnt work (and you do need to be persistant for a couple of weeks) then I would fit a bumper bit. This is much easier if you have someone else to hold your chook (wrap in a towel to stop the flapping).

Warm the bit up in hot water as it will make it more flexible, they are still quite tough to open out so you might find circlip pliers useful. Open the chooks beak and insert the flat piece then ensure the prongs go into the nostrils.

It will get easier

The bumpa bits worked for us.

I fitted it myself even though was new to chicken keeping and handling. Just caught chook in a towel and wrapped her so she couldn't flap. She did a bit of head shaking and scratching but was fine if not a little disgruntled. Peace was restored in an hour! She has done 2 months with hers and it fell off the other day and have had no problems since it has come off either.

Just hoping it goes smoothly with the nembies when they arrive.

The contents on the can, written in French, translate, I believe, into 'Animal Oil'....we can guess which end of The Animal it comes from

Thanks for the answers, I feel more confident about putting a bumpa bit on the Evil-O now, and will definitely do the towel thing. If I try Ukadex again, I'll hire a spacesuit and extra gas mask, and do as you did, pick them up and spray them in a more scientific and specific (phew!) way.

Good old Omlet forum to the rescue yet again :D

PS The dental hygienist was amazing, it didn't hurt at all! Unfortunately she's only a locum, I discovered, but am planning to follow her home so I Know Where She Lives and can go to her for the rest of my life for my dental hygiene.
