whats the average age for a first egg ....

Recommended Posts

our hens are twenty weeks this week and at least four out of the six look ready to lay. the other two though the same age look like it could be another two weeks or so . what is the average age for the first egg ? asking people who have hens seems more reliable than reading a book ... thanks for any help .. :?:

I'm sure that when I got my first girls I was told 24 - 26 weeks for hybrids and over 30 weeks for pure breeds. Each chicken is different and you may get some that lay much earlier or later than that.

Look out for their combs and wattles getting bigger and redder and when they start crouching you're about a week away from your first egg!

It won't be long now it's just having the patience that's tricky, we've all been there :D
