pepe
About my two buns, Im feeling pretty guilty about them being on decking only, when I got them we had big garden and lots of grass, we have sinced moved and have a much smaller garden, they free range when the weather is ok, but I do feel that they deserve better and have been thinking they would be better going to a more appropriate home. I would have to sell my rablu too am I just being silly and do rabbits really care about being on decking? Any thoughts from you lovely people, to rehome them would be the hardest decision to make, unless I found a perfect home!
catherinee99
It is difficult to say without seeing your set up but you know your rabbits- are they happy- is their behaviour any different? Think about houserabbbits- they do not have access to grass all the time. You do need to ensure you give them sufficient hay so their teeth do not become a problem. If they have freedom to free range when you are at home I am sure they love running around the decking anyway. You could do a box of grass or a few and change them when eaten? I did it when I had a flat without a garden and also took the rabbits to the park at weekends which got me lots of stares but they loved it. There are many rabbits bought on impulse and neglected who hardly see any love and affection. The fact you are worrying about it probably means that they are getting lots of love and cuddles and will adapt to the new environment- perhaps also get them some toys for stimulation. If their behaviour changes and they seem unhappy then think about rehoming. Perhaps post some photos so we can comment on the set up? cathybc
I would say your buns are having a much better life than many. I have two bonded pairs, one pair in a huge hutch, the other pair in the shed, and they too only get out on the grass in decent weather (ie not too often). They have lots of space, attention and toys and I have never worried about their lack of access to grass - although they do love it when then get the chance. When I had a homecheck (they are all rescues), the lady was more concerned about their living space and exercise than access to grass. Having said that, I have bought a run cover (from Scratch and Newton), so they can go on the grass in dodgier weather. So I would say that so long as they have space, stimulation and cuddles, being without grass should not be a problem. ps mine do also have a large square of carpet to sit on - and they do a lot of the time so must like the softer floor..... jenuk99
My bunny Mac is a Netherland Dwarf and she lives in my house she has a cage in the lounge and has free range of the house. I have a paved back yard which she likes to go out in but there is no grass. She has access to lots of hay all the time and we visit my parents regularly as they have a big garden with grass. When we are there Mac has a harness and lead which we hook onto a sort of washing line and she is able to run up and down the garden. She is happy with this situation and does not seem to be missing out on not being on grass all the time. I think it would be so sad to lose your bunnies for this reason. There is always around these problems, Mac loves the attention we get if we are out and about on the lead and harness. Jen
