first day of freedom!!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I let the girls out yesterday after a full week in the cube. They looked about abit first then Madras led them out for their first wander.

I was really protective of them  and so stayed with them for about an hour after making the garden gap proof and checking the height of the fences etc. We clipped their wings the night b4 just to be on the safe side( got scratches on my belly now) they are only 16 weeks and little Tikka is still tiny :anxious: but she's the more adventurous of the 4 of them.

I eventually had to make some tea so kept my eye on them from the kitchen. My neighbour said she has only ever seen one fox in 20 years but Im not sure about that as we have a big field behind our garden, although 2 llarmas live there to protect the farmers free range chickens at the top of the other field so that prob helps.

It was really lovely to see them running about and having a good peck. :)

Can't wait for the first egg prob 4 weeks off yet tho.

How long do u guys leave it till you let them out for the first time?

Yes, we waited a week and found they stayed really close to the hen house for the first couple of days...which was very reassuring!

It is great to see them out and about doing chickeny things...even if it does mean them digging their way under the apple tree. The other day I was about to panic because I thought one had gone missing and then I spotted her head just sticking up out of the massive hole they have dug...more of a dust well than a dust bath!

Hi guys,

Do u know, mine don't seem to dust bath at all!

They have a little bucket ( big enough for them ) with play sand and soil in but I think they just seem to scratch in it. Not seen any have a good old ruffle yet. Dont need to worry do I? Is it something they do more of when they get older?
