daren
Hi First of all I would like to say what a great forum this is, we have been browsing it for several weeks now. My wife and I are currently starting to set up a new chicken coop. We have hatched 16 chicks from 22 eggs kindly donated by an allotment keeper. All of the eggs were dark brown in colour bar one...... you'll probably be able to guess which chick came from that when you see the pictures. We are looking for some help in identifying the breed of chickens, we have been told by the egg donator that they are marans, can anybody tell us how to sex them? do we have to wait a bit longer to find out if they are cockerels or hens? They are currently just over 2 weeks old. We have a good home for the cockerels, my wife's Uncle's farm. The links for the pictures are below. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k71/dazzii/chicks/maranchick1.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k71/dazzii/chicks/maranchick2.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k71/dazzii/chicks/maran3.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k71/dazzii/chicks/maran4.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k71/dazzii/chicks/maran5.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k71/dazzii/chicks/maran6.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k71/dazzii/chicks/rhode1.jpg feeel free to ask for any pictures that may help,

Egluntyne
How lovely. Welcome to the forum. Good to hear that you have sorted homes for boys. Not fool proof, but in general Boys will have stockier legs, pointy feathers on the hackles, better developed combs and wattles and will feather up more slowly. Girls will be daintier, rounded feathers on the hackles, less well developed combs, and will feather up quicker. Gockerels may stand and look up if you throw something into the air, whereas hens may scatter.

mrsm_jones
The little yellow-headed one looks like my Speckled Sussex chick! A couple of those black ones have quite big combs for their age don't they?
