Help & advice please!!!...new chicken problem

Recommended Posts

I have just collect 5 new ex batt girls today from a closing poultry farm...

I was handed the boxes with the girls and took them away without inspecting them...

When I got home and let them out in the run...

3 seem fine..bit tattered but ok...

1 seems a little listless but is drinking etc...

The other 1 has a very dirty vent and looks like its slightly prolapsed...

I have tried to clean her up a bit...but she has poo stuck to her tight and she is red sore all underneath to her chest...

UPDATE: Just had another look and her vent has gone in a little bit after cleaning...but I can now see lots of bubbles and drips of clear liquid coming from her vent...which must be causing the soreness as its constantly dripping down...

Any ideas anyone??...

Kim

 oh dear ... I would say, take her back but I see that you say the farm is closing down.

Do you think she is trying to lay a soft-shelled egg? If so steaming might help (search on here for advice on this). Not sure what to suggest otherwise, other than make sure she's drinking.

You say she's red and sore underneath - do you think she (they) may have mites or lice? might be worth treating for this in case.

I'm no expert- hopefully someone else will come along with more specific advice.

Hi Kim,

All my girls were red and sore underneath when we got them, for today I would just make sure they are eating and drinking and settled.

Then have a look at them over the next couple of days if neccessary give the pooy one! a shallow warm bath to clean her up, then spray them etc, ex-batts nearly always have red mite!

Just try to do things gradually as its a big day and quite a shock for them!

Although initially they need a lot of TLC they are so rewarding x

Gah ... just realised these are ex-batts, Kim ... for some reason I read your original post and assumed you'd bought them from a breeder, I wouldn't have suggested taking her back if I'd realised!

That will teach me to read more carefully in future. How are they all today, any improvement?

The dripping from the vent could mean that she is egg bound, and the urates part of her droppings are coming away.

Why not give her vent a good greasing with some vaseline and then hold her carefully over some steam. It should relax the muscles and hopefully she will lay the egg.

Have a feel of her lower abdomen to see if you can feel an egg.

Don't tinker about inside her though, as a broken egg could make matters worse.

Let us know how you get on.

Edited for typos.

Hi everyone and thanks for all the advice!

I left them to settle in quietly yesterday and just had the odd peak in to check...

She seems to be eating and drinking ok...but still looks sore and drippy...

I tried to give her some live yoghurt and porridge last nite as someone else suggested it might have been a gut problem...

But they prefferred it as a foot bath I think...

I will go and give her some TLC in a while when its all quiet here...

and will update asap...

Thanx everyone...x
