zena
Fliss is an approx 7 months old warren hen (similar to the gingernut ranger),she started laying very large eggs every day in April, every so often we found a soft shelled egg.I had left them grit out but we also have tried crushed oyster shells and baked crushed eggshells too.Twice in the last few weeks she has laid normally in the morning and then later in the evening has laid two soft shelled eggs in quick succession. She seems to exhaust herself and is very listless and very poorly then in the morning seems to recover. Is this a problem with her breeding(as the warren is bred predominantly for battery hen keeping )or is there something I can do to help her? I have ordered some hen spice to give her a tonic but it really upsets me to see her feeling ill she is a very good natured hen and although you shouldn't have favourites she probably is mine!!! Egluntyne
Why not try her with a desertspoonful of limestone flour in a grubful off pellets. You get it from equestrian shops, or shops/ebay sites as sold for reptiles. It is pure calcium carbonate and easily absorbed. I find it works wonders.
