gracefruit
I would like to give jam making a go, but I'm a bit confused about the actual bottling. After I put the jam into the jars and put the lids on, do I then need to vacuum seal the jars with heat? Perhaps with boiling water? I have done this when canning salsa. Is the process the same for jam?
Christian
If you make sure the jars are hot, then they will seal themselves when you put the hot jam in. Make sure you screw the lids on tight and after a while you will see the 'bubble' on the jar pop up.

missuscluck
I heat my jars in the oven before putting the jam in.
gracefruit
Hi Lynda, Thanks for your help. How hot is the oven? I've only ever used boiling water.
Christian
About 140C for 15 minutes should do it!

missuscluck
Christian Thats a very concise answer! My jam making is never that precise I operate with the chuck it in the pan method. Put a plate in the freezer, put a blob of jam on the plate and if it gets a skin on it its done! No thermometers in this house!
Christian
I use the saucer method too, ever since I dropped the thermometer!
