Brinsea R-com incubator - Any good ??

Recommended Posts

I know one of our magnanimous moderators will move this to the appropriate place.

Can anyone recommend the R-com, from practical experience.

I was going to get one later this year - after I make the long-planned move to the Scottish borders - just as a one-off exercise to hatch a couple of muscovies, and a few rare breed chickens; but I notice that Brinsea don't appear to feature them on their website any longer.

If anyone can recommend them, I'll try and grab one from another source before the supply dries up completely.

Alternatively, any other recommendations for a cheap, reliable machine would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

M.

The RCom 20 is brilliant. Very easy to use & the auto turning feature is very handy. The window gives a clear view of your eggs & I find the whole unit really clean. It is fully automatic, so once you have topped up the water & put your eggs in, the machine does everything. I had the rcom20 - because I'm sometimes away & I wouldn't have been able to turn eggs & I needed something reliable. If you can, I'd go for this. But if not then a maino incubator, with auto turn, or a corti. The main thing is the auto turn, a clear view of your eggs & a humidty dial / hygrogometer. Buy the best incubator you can afford, it's better in the long run. That's if you don't have a broody hen.

Hi Emma.

Thanks so much for your reply: notes have been taken for future reference.

Until I read your reaction, I was sort-of reluctant to spend a great deal, 'cos I only intend to use it to hatch a couple of pet muscovies, (the delight of my childhood and so much better if they see you straight after hatching), and the beginnings of a flock of some interesting rare breed chooks. (Apart, Of Course, from as many ex-batts as my new garden will allow - Not even looking at granite worktops or spa corner baths; all I ask the estate agents is the size of the garden and any restriction on keeping poultry!!). Once I'm started, I'm hoping nature will take its own broody course.

However, I suspect your approach is way more sensible; i.e. get a good one and try to sell it later when it has served its purpose.

Thanks again.

Max.

(By the way as I'm heading towards Dumfries and Galloway later this year; does anyone know anything about Scots Greys or Dumpies ??).

we had our R-Com mini from these guys... http://www.eggincubators.co.uk

who are actually P & T Poultry trading under a different name (as far as I can tell)

haven't had any succes with it yet but we've only tried once and were told fertility was low

the eggs we put in it had been moved from an older, faulty, incubator after 6 days so we weren't holding up much hope

have just put 3 more eggs in, from a different breeder, on Sunday... will see what happens this time

just noticed they've put the price of the mini up by £10 since we baught ours 3 weeks ago

Thanks a lot, Toasted.

As it might well take me months to find the right Scottish garden, especially as I'm 450 miles from the search area, I think I'd better get an R-com soon, before the price goes up even more.

It looks as if the same firm are selling on E-bay as well, so I may put in a bid there and see if I can get it slightly cheaper.

Do keep us all abreast of developments.

Best wishes for a sucessful hatching this time.

Max.
