poachedegg
Sorry didn't know where to post. I have bought a sack of potatoes from the Farm Shop today. Have just opened them to do some batch cooking and the skins are greenish. When I have peeled them they look normal. I have googled green potatoes - and all the articles say that they could be poisinous in large quantities, however they all imply that this is if the inside is green - which mine aren't. Anybody help me out before I make humungous amounts of mash, wedges and chips?
Mrs Frugal
We've peeled and eaten some of ours which were green on the outside just on the skin and we're still here to tell the tale . I wouldn't eat anything that was so green that you couldn't cut it out or peel it off though.
poachedegg
Thanks Kate - it is just the skin - just healthy white potato inside
Mrs Frugal
Sounds just like the batch of our potatoes which I forgot to put in a dark place! The skins went green but the flesh was lovely and white beneath it when I peeled them. The potatoes were delicious
Spike-J
As far as I know potatoes are green when they aren't earthed up enough when they are growing so yes its a reaction to light levels. For years I've just peeled off the green bits (and probably have eaten the odd slightly green one). As yet no harm done. I suspect there probably have to be significant quantities eaten
