Misapp
has anyone had any trouble with their pepperpots? i had 1 pepperpot & 1 ginger nut ranger supplied with my eglu and the pepperpot keeps jabbing at the ranger with her beak. i don't think shes hurting her as she just clucks a bit and then walks off but i am concerned that she will carry on and end up distressing my ranger. any comments appreciated 11/9/08 louise 11/9/08 thelma 11/9/
chucknette
Hi The pepperpots are feisty girls I had one pepperpot and one gingernut and the pepperpot became the top chook. When I got six more chickens she was still top chook as she was determined she was staying up at the top so there was lots of pecking for a while. Nothing serious though. The six I got were two pepperpots and four gingernuts. The gingernuts are friendly and the pepperpots are stand offish. Hope this helps Best wishes
miffy
Hi is she laying yet?? Violet was rather a bully and pushed herself around until she began to lay, now she is the most affable and easiest to handle. ..Violet is no longer called Violent
Mumsvoice
it just takes a few days for pecking order to be established. my pepperpot pecked gingernut and chased her around for 3/4 days but they are now the best of friends. hopefully they will have settled down by the start of next week
Egluntyne
Sounds like normal pecking order stuff. As long as no blood is drawn, and the gingernut is being allowed to eat and drink, I wouldn't worry too much.
Misapp
thanks for the replies. i think i was just being a worried first time mom they do seem to be getting on better already. the gent who delivered them said he thought they were much younger than 18 weeks, he reckons about 12-13 and my ginger nut is still practically all white so he might be right. sids mum
We started witha pepper pot and a ranger. Pepper pot is soooo the top bird. She started to lay first and liked rubbing the other ones beak in it. Once the ginger nut started to lay they seemed a lot friendlier to each other. Have since introduced 2 more chucks and Pepper pot is still no.1 bird. Pepperpot ( Priscilla Queen of the Chcikens) is stand offish and not as cuddly as the ranger ( Audrey ) but just as people haev personalities, so do chickens.
