michele
I got a new hen yesterday - she is about 18 weeks old. I noticed that she had some damage to the feathers on her back and thought it may be from bullying from the hens/cock she was sharing with before I got her. Today I have noticed that she seems to be pecking at her back. Could this be lice/fleas ?
Ain't Nobody Here
Could be . Worth having a look to see. I found lice on Molly recently, round her vent. There was no mistaking them . A quick skoosh of Johnsons Anti-Mite spray and a snip of the feathers with eggs on them and all was well .
Jules.
My hens had lice recently. I spotted them by my weekly check of gently pushing back the feathers on the neck, & there they were, like little grains of rice or tiny woodlice Unlike ANH I didn't see any eggs, but I did treat them the same with the Johnsons mite/lice spray. I sprayed all the hens once, paying particular attention to the neck area, wing pits & knicker feathers. I had to do egg withdrawal for 2 days, but the eggs weren't wasted, I scrambled them & fed them back to the hens!
