Guard Chickens!

Recommended Posts

I have been spending a lot more time at home recently and have noticed how noisy my chickens are in the day (oh dear...). When one of them goes to the nest box to lay an egg the others make as much noise as they can until she comes out. This, I thought, was okay - they were missing their friend.

Then I noticed that when they heard a voice or vehicle near the house they all started making as much noise as they could. As we live in a rural but residential area this can happen quite a lot. One of my neighbours commented that it sounded as if they were in pain

The only way that I can stop it is to let them out of their run. The distractions in the garden seem to interest them more than guard duties. Does anyone else have chickens who give early warning of potential intruders?

We'd always thought our Miss Pepperpot quiet until one Sunday morning. I don't know what startled her, probably a cat or the Sparrowhawk (a frequent visitor) but she was making a terrible racket like a beginner playing an out of tune trumpet. It took about an hour to calm her down. Luckily no complaints from the neighbours.

Ours are also noisier when they hear someone coming. It doesn't follow that they will be quieter if let out into the garden. We are lucky that our neighbour is home all day and has said that she will look out for the girls so after some serious garden reinforcing and the purchase of multiple fox watches, ours are out most of the day. They charge at the patio doors when they see us and shout at the top of their little voices. Our neighbours also tell us that the girls are quiet all day until they see us.
