In this 'chicken or egg' question, I think the egg comes first. If companies stop buying battery eggs, there will eventually be no reason to have battery hens. Once everyone is converted to free-range eggs, there will be a short period while the left-over battery hens are eaten up (sorry, that sounds horribly gruesome - and I'm a vegetarian!).
