Forge Cottage
Sorry, no connection with the recent post of a similar name... Question: If a Chicken eats a garden worm, does it digest it completely, or do you sometimes get a half digested thing in the poo? Unpleasant bit now follows: I have seen three or four poos in recent days with a stringy, mucousy and bloody thing inside. The rest of each poo and other poos being quite normal. I was at first concerned that one of the girls might have had an internal problem, but they seem to be fairly bright and feeding OK. Just not putting on as much weight as I would have expected - and still no blooming eggs yet. They are free ranging and do eat worms. I have also noticed that in the last few days there are plenty of tiny soft feathers, warren coloured only, in the house each morning. I wondered whether there was pecking going on, but they all get on very well together and allow each other to feed etc OK with no bullying. So I thought maybe there was something itchy encouraging extra preening... I checked and no sign of red mite (and they are always happy in the house). House, bars and run kept nice and clean. I have no experience of Lice, so not sure what to look for in that respect. Should I be at all concerned?
Egluntyne
You are right, you can identify chunks of garden worm in the poo. A bit alarming at first. However, it they sre eating garden worms and slugs etc, these act as hosts for internal parasites, so it would be an idea to use a wormer such as Flubenvet from time to time. Re the feathers....they are probably having a tiny moult.
Forge Cottage
Thanks Egluntine. That's what I hoped. I have seen a lot of mention of this Flubenvet stuff but not got any yet (sounds like something out of Bill and Ben). ...Ain't this a useful Forum!
