HENthusiastic
Hi guys. Well Matilda has been on antibiotics about a week now and seems more perky...... but....... I'm fairly sure she still isn't sitting down. As she walks about the garden she stops and picks her feet up, one after the other pulls it up as high as it will go and clenches her feet. It looks like she's got really aching legs. Also, she does seem to be walking with her legs a bit wider apart than usual. Its as if she's sore and doesnot sit down and coz of that her legs are sore?? Any ideas. Shes doing so well, Id hate to loose her now.
jos
Hi, I'm no expert at all, but perhaps I can offer you some small comfort by saying my ex-batt lollipop has been showing the same sort of symptoms as your Matilda. Every day she spend quite alot of time just standing on one leg. with the other one curled under her. She looks poorly and walks more slowly than the others. BUT she will always perk up for food, so, although she isn't "right", she can't be feeling too bad. She's been like this for around 2 months now, shows no sign of getting worse and gets a little bit of extra attention and a few extra mealworms when the others aren't looking..... so I reckon life is still ok for her! Hope Matilda continues to improve.
Angels4
I've no experience as I haven't any ex-batts, but from what I know about they are cramped into those tiny little cages, perhaps Matilda has a bit of arthritis and the colder weather is making it more evident. I wonder if a bit of childrens asprin would help?!? Can chickens have asprin? Sounds like Lollipop is playing it up a bit for extra treats though.. HENthusiastic
HI guys. Thanks for your input. I might look into finding out if theres some kind of chicken pain killer I can get and give her little bits of. Good idea Angels4. Jos, hope your lollipop gets on okay. It was reassuring to hear of her trundling on the same for 2 months. I have just gone out and shut up their door for the night..... and she was sitting down! Thats the first time Ive seen her sit down in ages, so hopefully thats a good sign that her tummy is feeling better.

HENthusiastic
Thanks. Matilda is looking distinctly better yesterday morning and this morning. Sadly I'm not seeing much of her at the moment, just a quick half an hour or so before going to work. But her posture and movements seem to be better, so I am getting ever more hopeful. She also had a good shout yesterday morning, which is very like her!
Lydia
My vet has prescribed Metacam for my chickens before and it's good stuff. I can't remember the dosage but it's not much (something like 0.3-0.6ml depending on their weight). Arm yourself with a 1ml syringe (available from most chemists).
