fourfinches
We grew some sunflowers this year, they're now finishing flowering & are producing lots of seeds. Can I just give them to the chickens as they are or should I do anything with them first? Thanks Morag
Lesley-Jean
You need to hang the flower heads somewhere airy to dry before removing the seeds from the flower head. I don't know if hens can crack the seed shells perhaps someone else does. Sun flower hearts are rich in protein and fats and are good for boosting the mega 3 in eggs, but should not be over fed as a high fat diet can affect the chicken's liver.
