I just knitted a lot of 'one stitch per row' stitches to make a thin thread of knitting, then used a piece off a roll of silver jewellery wire to make the coil. I threaded the knitting over the wire, looped a bead in at the bottom and hung it from an earring fixing - the ones you use for dangly earrings. Mohair with a slight spangle works best.
