On Saturday - Astrid laid her first egg. After many trips to the nest box that morning she finally laid an egg mid afternoon in the middle of the run.

 

Today - there was another Astrid egg in the run. I know it's her, we only have three laying at the moment, one of which I can't identify but is laying little brown eggs - Astrids eggs are big and pale.

 

Astrid is the boss and top of the pecking order. Any reason why she's not using the nest box? She knows where it is, she was in and out of it most of Saturday. I cleaned it out today, maybe she'll find it more inviting?

All of mine laid their first eggs in the run . I put a golf ball in the nestbox and they've laid there ever since - whether that gave them the idea or they would have done it anyway I'll never know .

yes, i think its a new to laying symptom. Im sure she will get the swing of it soon.

Two of mine laid their first eggs in the run - in fact I saw it happen on each occasion. The hen would walk past and an egg just fell out! She didn't even appear to take any notice - or was too embarrassed to own up

I think the first egg must be such a novel feeling for them, it takes them by surprise and they don't quite know what they're supposed to do . You can imagine them thinking, "eek, what's that just fell out of my behind ?" .

No egg yesterday so I'll wait and see if she gets it right today!
