likeastar--x
help! never done this before! the girls need to be given antibiotic by a syringe to protect them if any nasty fox germs got in them, but the vet couldnt do it as she isnt a chicken specialist and didnt know how to do it im very confused. i know that it very important i get this right and put it in the right hole and not into their lungs! does anyone have any advice or know of any postings or websites where there are instructions on how to do this? im very nervous!! Egluntyne
Don't worry......it isn't difficult. Just wrap the hen in a towel so that she doesn't flap, and gently push the syringe into her beak. Don't force the liquid into her as she may gag on it. Just gently trickle it in. Even better if you can get someone to hold her whilst you do it.
likeastar--x
okay, i did the poorly chicken and she was fine, we gently eased her beak open and pushed it in and she allowed us to trickle it down her throat. HOWEVER two very naughty healthy chickens arent happy with us even TOUCHING its beak, let alone prising it open. when we eventually managed to get it open and the syringe inside, they pulled their beaks back and closed them again i was getting worried we'd blooming break their necks the amount of wriggling they did. is there any way to put it in their water or something...? the antibiotics for these two are just precautionary, as neither we think were hurt, one might have been scratched but not breaking the skin, so at least the unwell one is cooperating. jos
In the past I have put antibiotics onto a small amount of bread which my chicken wolfed down with no problem.............
jade&mike
try wrapping the chicken in a towel and then gently stroke/tickle the chicken under the beak - between her wattles and this should make her open her beak and then swallow, it has always worked for me. good luck. chickens
Hey welcome to my world I have now been administering antibiotics to Villie by syringe for about 3 weeks. There have been interesting incidents with my partner getting a face full, and more recently my covering his coat which she then rubbed her head on giving her sticky head feathers and won't seem to lie down. Now she is getting better its getting more difficult but only 2 more days to go!! I like the bread idea - I contemplated a grape but early on she was not interested in taking them from me. Good luck

Mutrix Farmers
We're giving Charlotte antibiotics at the moment. OH kneels on the floor holding her body with his legs, then eases open her beak for me to trickle in the solution. Apparently the vet made it look easy!! emmaw298
ive had to give antibiotics several times in the past. i found it helped to sit the bird on my lap facing away from me, wrapped in a towel. I would then hold the syringe with one hand and with my other hand put my thumb and forefinger in each side of the beak to hold it slightly open - sort of like a pincer shape with my fingers. it helps to ensure the bird's beak is kept open whilst inserting the syringe. my grandad taught me this when I was little as he used to breed pigeons.
