Vivihen
My husband has a colleague who also keeps chickens; just before Christmas they were having one of their 'chicken chats' when a new member of the shift overheard them and told them that his family used to keep chickens-one of them reached the grand old age of seventeen. Is this a record?
fowlbird
must be! I thought my ex-husband's were doing well at 12...
Olly
Wow! someone on here has posted before about a 'teenage' chicken but 17 is remarkable. As more and more people are now keeping chickens in a domestic environment, I wonder if we'll see more old hens? I wonder how many years before she stopped laying! sandyhas3chucks
Someone told me a similar story, her mother in law had one for years before they were married and they had been married 14 years and she was still with them! cool eh? moomin
The breeder I got my two from had an old barnevelder - she was 13 and still laying about 30 eggs a year apparently. Her 'undercarriage' was a bit saggy though, bless her!
