Broody already?

Recommended Posts

Fingers crossed she's gone off the idea and it was just Mary being confused with being a newish egg layer :) Wouldn't worry about the grapes either although I went on to the putting in food method as it was proving a nightmare for me to indiviually feed my little monsters grapes -lol

Hi

Don't know if this helps but my Pepperpot, Flower, went broody twice last year.

She wasn't at all aggressive but it was extremely frustrating taking her out of the nest box, only for her to run back into it screeching :wall:

Second round of broodiness made her determined to sit foreeeeever :notalk: . We tried taking her out.......didn't try the cold water nonsense - too cruel  , so I bought some hatching eggs and let her sit.

While she sat in the nest box it put the others from laying comfortably.....I have a cube; you couldn't do this with an eglu.........so it did cause some hustle and bustle with the others when they wanted to lay. :x

We let her sit for about 10 days until I realised it was time for her to get her own place........we lost one of the hatching eggs due to the amount of activity in the nesting box as it got trodden on :boohoo: ...would have been a Silkie!

I then bought a broody coop and Flower successfully hatched two chicks on Sept 6th. We now have two Buff Sussex - a boy and a girl

She was a fantastic Mum and is now back with the others in the cube........Sussex's are in their new Eglu.

The whole thing was an expensive but incredibly wonderful experience.......would thoroughly recommend!

I'd say, get some hatching eggs and give it a go, if you have the extra room. Good Luck!
