Eglu or Cube?

Recommended Posts

HI

I know this is asking the obvious as most people seem to upgrade to a cube eventually

Would i be best to get an eglu to move it around regularly as I only want 2/3 hens?

Thought as it was smaller it would be easier(I am going to build a large run with a top)

OR

cube

My thinking is after a couple of years if I need to get some new hens another 2nd eglu would be the best thing(then I dont have to go through all the fighting and pecking that i have read about..

I have kept ducks before and they were quite easy to introduce new ones to??

I keep changing my mind eglu or cube? I am worried that the eglu could turn out to be false economy

thanks

I would say IMO if you are thinking of possibly increasing your chicken number from 2/3 then get a cube from the beginning as that would house them all in one unit, however you have a valid point about intro's so in that respect you would have to sort out some seperate accomodation by borrowing etc at time of adding new girls..

There is nothing wrong with having two eglu's though if you prefer to go down that route, it's all about your preference and how your set up would be.

I changed to a cube because of my sore back, and this in turn led me to get two more girlies however if I didn't have the bad back I would probably have stuck with the eglu and just the two girls, as I do love it. (I will be so sad to see it go  )

Good luck with your choice. :)

Hi

thanks for letting me know, i did go to see an eglu and a cube and agree the cube was much more room etc and was easy to move

Its just such a lot of money that I am undecided! I must say I did like the cube. I am not far from Cambridge are u getting rid of an eglu ?

Thank you very much for offering for me to come to see them but I have already seen them.

That is very kind of you though, I do enjoy reading all the info on this forum..just like so many other people am def going to get some chickens just v undecided as I had about 9 ducks and couldnt give the eggs away quick enough!

So hence just having a couple of hens this time round.

I had a wood duck house before and these plastic ones I can see why they would be much easier to clean(Ducks are the messiest creatures)

thank you

Eglu's really keep their value 2nd hand, so it is not really a false economy. If you start with an Eglu you could later get a cube, keep the eglu for a couple of months overlap for slow intros and then sell the eglu when they are all in the cube.

Currently I have 2 eglu, when my new chickens (layers) come we will be getting a cube and getting rid of the 2nd eglu.
