Hi all you Green-fingered Gurus,

 

I've just found in my hopefully soon-to-be-veggie patch (!) a non-returnable builders bag, which I thought I'd fill up & use as a raised bed, not sure what for yet though.

 

As it's quite deep, would I be ok filling most of it with "almost done" compost, then a top layer of soil & "done" compost?

Yes, I've seen some use a layer of unrotted compost, topped with topsoil. You will need to make sure that worms can get into it though as it is them that will mix it all up and help finish off the composting process.

there is a borough in london that turned land into an 'allotment' by filling the concrete area with builders bags full of soil and compost and grew everything... all the local tenants and kids got a bag each and grew what they liked. Looked fab

I'm hoping my Mum's builders will donate a few of their bags too I can do some more, as you say Poet, perfect for potatoes, except I've practically filled it already & don't fancy emptying any out in order to do the gradual pot fill - I've got tyres to do as spud growers too, so I think I'll do this one with my garlic & onion sets - not too high growing & already purchased ready to go in!

 

Snowy, I've layered the contents less rotted in the bottom, almost done in the middle & will slop a load of well rotted/top soil on the top with a generous dose of creepy crawlies hopefully!

Good point, I tried to stab the fork through the fabric & it wouldn't go...and forgot to go & get a knife to do the job instead ! I'll do that next time I'm up there, thanks!
