maggiesfarm
Hi folks Just after some advice re chicken poo and compost. I line my hut with a good quality broadsheet then layer wood shavings on top. At the moment I'm picking the poo (yee haaa!!) out and throwing the paper and shavings away. Should I just dump it all in the compost bin ? Is it just me or is there something therapeutic about poo gathering ............ Mags
cluckbok
Hi ya, I would have thought it could all go in the compost bin, would be easier than pooh picking
Boybeck
I've been putting the chicken poo around my roses. I wonder if it will make a difference this year... we shall see!
quickcluck
I used to chuck all mine in together, but found that it didn't break down particularly quickly even with acelerater so have gone back to doing a bit of both
Larkspurs
We've just been chucking it all in but we haven't kick started the compost bin yet. It's really dry and not doing much, so we are going to moisten it. Here's a couple of links that we've found useful. http://www.safegardening.co.uk/StartingCompostHeap.html http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/basics/techniques/soil_makecompost2.shtml
Stevie
I empty the poo tray straight onto the borders and with all this wet weather recently-it breaks down very fast. By late summer i should have 15ft Triffids growing with amount of fertilizer in soil...
maggiesfarm
Thanks for this. My concern is that like quickcluck says, it wont break down quickly and we'll be left with a porridge of wood shavings that I will then have to "sift". Larkspurs
You can help accelerate the process (as long as you have the right balance of stuff anyway) by adding a thin layer of bokashi bran to the mix.
