miffy
our new bathrooms that is !!!! As mentioned in a previous thread, we are looking into doing our bathroom and en suite up (finally ) It will involve moving walls etc. We are not competant to do it ourselves so need to get a builder in . our worry is, should we do this now or wait till the general economy improves?? It will use up most of our savings, how likely are we to hit very bad times with massive inflation or even the dreaded deflation (whatever that is). My husband is retired, we have YS & MiL living with us I dont work, yet , but am about to start voluntary work with NT. We have 1 bath in main house, no shower. MiL has own bathroom with bath in her annex, which I suspect she is begining to have trouble getting into, although she would never admit to it. what a conundrum, gives much anxiety at the moment
jackiepoppies
Hi Miffy, Just a suggestion. I am assuming MIL is fairly elderly? How about applying for her to have a shower fitted through Social Services or whatever deparment deals with that sort of thing? I know that doesn't resolve your dilemma, but it would mean not worrying about her. With regard to yours, I would assume you could get some very good deals at the moment and if you shop around you might be pleasantly surprised. Just don't employ anyone on an hourly basis, only on a proper estimate for the complete job! Best of luck, Jx
miffy
thanks Jackie, good point about not paying hourly rates, hadn't considered that as a potential issue
Olly
well your savings aren't earning much at the moment, and you may be able to get some good deals if you shop around. If you wait till things 'reflate', your savings won't have increased and prices aren't likely to be lower. It really depends how much you want it done though - if it's going to improve your quality of life, and especially that of your MIL, then go for it. Money is only worth what it can buy you! jackiepoppies
Oh Miffy, Go for it.....you can't take it with you and no doubt (?) DS is going to contribute in some way as he, no doubt, will benefit in the short and long term There will always be soup kitchens if you need 'em and at least you will have a roof over your head and somewhere to read War & Peace Jx
miffy
hahahahah, found out I can buy the fittings etc MUCH cheaper on line than locally , its a shame really as I would prefer to support local shops
Olly
I know, like you I'd prefer to support local but sometimes the price difference is so great - even with delivery - that you can't ignore it. I think this one of those decisions that you will agonise over (you clearly already have!) for weeks, but then once you've made the decision to go ahead, you will forget all about the pros and cons and just focus on how marvellous your new bathroom is going to be. I've done this so many times, I never make a big purchase without writing long lists of 'for' and 'against'. I usually find them buried at the bottom of a pile of filing, months later! Hen Watch
Hi Miffy, Interesting one this. We booked an installer to fit a new bathroom and the waiting list was 1 year. During this time hubbie was made redundant. 6 months later, still redundant, we got a call with a possible start date. Hubbie and I had conflicting views. I wanted to cancel and keep the pennies in the bank and hubbie wanted to go for it. Anyway, we did go for it and the new bathroom has benefitted the family enormously (but not put value on the house). So I am pleased that we did it. But I did ensure we had some savings left as hubbies redundancy after 16 years came out of the blue and I really need to know now that I have money behind me just in case. So, can't help on the decision, but thought I would share what we did. Also, interesting point of view on savings vs inflation on this website. Can't say I really understand it all myself, but the link is below. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1496519
