Run Floor - Can we leave black membrane down ?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Eglu (green eglu) arrives next saturday :) with PPPPGNR

In our garden we have slate which we are moving to the side and putting in a wooden border and filling with wood chip. At the moment covering the soil is a black membrane that is used to keep weeds out. Can I leave this down and put the wood chip on top. If I do have to remove the membrane there is about 6 inches of sand on top of the original garden soil - OH went a little mad when ordering sand to level the garden up - bit like a beach underneath

Thanks, so many questions

we have that weed supressing membrane under our path which is covered with stones, the girls dig up the stones and carry on trying to dig thru the membrane

Apart from the possibility of them destroying it, I think it would make cleaning out the run very awkward indeed.

Our run is on soil covered with aubiose. every 4-6 weeks DH digs out the pooey aubiose (which gets composted) then he digs garden lime into the soil to sweeten it then sprinkles stalosan F over the top and then puts fresh aubiose down.

you wouldn't be able to dig any lime into your soil (or sand) with the membrane down.

I agree...your girls will soon dig up all the membrane...my girls have dug out 3 bags of woodchip from their run and tipped it out of the side of the pen, to get down to the bare earth that was formerly our lawn !!

you should see the havoc they sometimes wreak with the newspaper under their roosting bars too LOL!!!!!

edited to say, having re-read your post and seen you have inches of sand down too...I would just put the wood chip down, and wait until the day they dig up the membrane, rather than go to the effort of digging it all up yourselves.... :-D

very best of luck with your chooks :-)
